Equipment Selection :: Return Pump

Selecting the right return pump for your setup is actually more complicated than one might think, but with the right tools it can be simplified for the novice "such as myself" The loss of pressure over a vertical distance is known as head loss. Therefore we need to calculate our head loss to ensure that our pump is powerful enough to move water from the sump back to the display aquarium. The following is a link to a very nice head loss calculator.

It takes into account the distance the water will need to travel along with a few other factors to tell you how much flow that you can expect from your pump. This will help you size your pump properly along with your overflow box. I wound up going with a Mag 7 which is perfect for my setup.
