Originally when I bought the tank, the employee at the fish store told me that I wouldn't need a heater since the tank lights and pumps would do a good enough job of heating the water. We live in Ohio and my tank is in the family room where there is a fireplace that allows a pretty decent draft. This means that room may sometimes hit some pretty cool temperatures during the winter. I did not take her advice and did buy a 300 watt heater. I wanted to find one that had a nice digital control and where the heating element fit in the main chamber of my sump. Therefore I selected this nice finnex model.
