Before we get into filling the tank, I wanted to dedicate 1 post to electrical safety. This may save you or your property from a disaster. First and foremost it is very important to have a GFCI outlet. This may be your last line of defense preventing you from a very bad shock or a property fire. If you are not familiar with how to install one, contact an electrician. The outlets themselves are not very expensive and definitely worth it. The other alternative is a to get a GFI that plugs into your existing wall outlet. I have this model and use it for for my power head and heater when mixing water.
It is also important to use drip loops. This means that keeping part of all electrical cords below the level of the outlet. This allows for any excess water that runs down the cord to drip off instead of running straight down the cord and into the outlet.
